Speaking at New York Comic Con, Nicolas Cage said he wouldn’t work with Amazon again because of its interest in AI, and denied he’s making National Treasure 3.

Amazon’s glossy superhero thriller series Spider-Noir appeared to go over well with both audiences and critics, yet the mega-corporation rather surprisingly decided not to renew it for a second series last month.

There may be a reason for that: Nicolas Cage, Spider-Noir’s star and a disagreement with Amazon over generative AI.

Cage was at New York Comic Con over the weekend, and during a panel discussion, made it clear that he had no plans to work with the firm again.

“Amazon is a very AI friendly company to the tune of $50 billion invested to OpenAI,” Cage said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I am not an AI friendly actor. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. It’s kind of like I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again. But that’s OK.”

Cage then shot down an August story that National Treasure 3, after years in limbo, was finally about to happen. You may recall that this came straight from franchise director Jonathan Turteltaub, who said on a live podcast recording that there was a script that Disney and Cage were happy with.

It turns out that Cage was far less aware of this script than Turteltaub appeared to imply.

Of this, Cage said, “Jonathan Turteltaub, he gets a microphone in his hand and he goes to Philadelphia and says, ‘We’re doing National Treasure 3, and Nic’s coming. I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t sign up for that. You got to get these microphones out of these directors’ hands.”

The actor then said, “We’ll see if I want to get together with it,” before jokingly adding that he thought National Treasure 3 should see his hero, Ben Gates, “going after the Epstein files.”

“That would be relevant,” he said, “I’ll make that movie.”

Cage then appeared to drop a further bombshell that may have people at HBO scrambling for their mobile phones.

“I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” Cage said. “My agent’s out there somewhere listening. That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”

HBO has yet to confirm or deny whether the next season of True Detective will star Nicolas Cage. We’ll keep you updated on all this as we hear more.
